Rizvi criticises The Daily Star Editor's article on International Day of Democracy
BNP today harshly criticised The Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam for his commentary on democracy and alleged that it was against the party.
On International day of Democracy (September 15), Anam wrote an article styled "After 30 years of autocracy's demise, democracy still remains a distant dream".
The party held a press briefing at its Nayapaltan headquarters to give a formal reaction about the article.
BNP's senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi along with former student leaders addressed the press briefing.
Rizvi alleged that in the article, the writer has given false, misleading, motivated and irrelevant opinion on former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
He claimed that the direct and indirect remarks of the writer about Khaleda Zia has created negative impression in the public mind.
"It is tantamount to yellow journalism and praising of incumbent 'midnight government'," he said.
Rizvi alleged that Anam's writing about August 21 grenade attack reflected nothing but the prime minister's and her cabinet members' propaganda and falsehood.
"Vision and mission of his (Anam) writing was to publish false and baseless stories against BNP," he added.
The BNP leader said it seems the only target of Mahfuz Anam is to please the government.
The party alleged that Anam along with some other civil society members were engaged in deep conspiracy to establish an unconstitutional 1/11 government, killing democracy.
It alleged that Anam has been working as an agent of foreign financers and local intelligence agencies.
Rizvi said when army-backed caretaker government assumed the office, Mahfuz Anam wrote an article claiming his success of bringing in the then Fakhruddin government in the office.
The Daily Star newspaper published articles welcoming the army-backed undemocratic and autocratic government, he said.
Rizvi alleged that Mahfuz Anam played an important role in creating ground to arrest political leaders, publishing false and baseless reports against them.
"We think his article is crocodile tears for democracy and a new edition of yellow journalism," he said.
