Rapist sentenced to life term marries victim at Rajshahi Jail gate
Upon a High Court order, the authorities of Rajshahi Central Jail arranged the wedding of a rapist and his victim at the jail gate today.
The rapist, Prodip Khalko (30), of Chaitanyapur village in Rajshahi's Godagari upazila has been serving life-term for last eight years in a rape case, reports our Rajshahi staff correspondent quoting the Jail Superintendent Subrata Kumar Bala.
"He is likely to be freed on bail after the marriage," he said, adding that the marriage was completed following Hindu rituals.
The victim along with her eight-year-old son and nearly a dozen members of both her and the rapist's families were present during the marriage ceremony.
Quoting the case statement, the jail superintendent said, Prodip and the victim were cousins and they developed a romantic relationship. In 2011, when she was 14, she became pregnant. Prodip then refused to marry her.
On October 25, 2011, she filed a rape case accusing Prodip with Godagari Police Station.
On June 12, 2012, Rajshahi's Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal sentenced him to life term in the rape case.
Several months ago this year, his lawyer sought his bail from the High Court on condition that he would marry his cousin. His lawyer also submitted the victim's consent to the court.
On October 22, an HC bench of two justices -- M Enayetur Rahim and Mostafijur Rahman -- ordered for their marriage at the jail gate. The court also ordered the jail authority to send the marriage documents to the court within 30 days of marriage.
