Police arrest two for assaulting doctor in Kishoreganj

Police arrested two persons this afternoon for their alleged involvement in assaulting a doctor in Kishoreganj on Wednesday evening.

The arrestees were identified as Faridul Islam, 46, and Azizul Islam, 40, of Gaital area in Kishoreganj town, said Kishoreganj Officer-in-charge of sadar Model Police Station Md Abu Bakar Siddiq.

On information, a police team raided Gaital area and arrested them around 4:00pm, said the OC. They were being interrogated at the polie station, added the OC.

An ex-leader of transport workers' association, Manik Mia, 45, and his accomplcies allegedly assaulted a doctor when he went left his house in Gaital on emergency duty on Wednesday evening.

The doctor lodged a case with the police station around 11:00pm later that night, accusing the ex-leader and his four unidentified accomplices.

Quoting the case, the OC said Dr Md Sadek Hossain Shakil, 32, an anaestetist at River View Clinic in Kishoreganj town, resides at a rented house in Gaital.

The owner of the hosue, also a female doctor at Kishoreganj General Hospital, tested Covid-19 positive on April 26 and the five-storied hosue was since put under lockdown.

Shakil, riding in his private car, went out of his house in the afternoon to attend to a patient admitted at the cinic for C-section operation.

After completing his duty, when Shakil reached near his house just before iftar, Manik Mia and his men waylaid the doctor and started verbally abusing him, said the OC quoting the case report.

At one stage, they forced the doctor to open the windowpanes of his car and then Manik and his accomplices started assaulting the doctor physically because the doctor went out defied lockdown, the OC said.

The doctor told them about his urgent business, but they did not bother and continued their assault, the OC added. Hearing the screams, locals rushed to the spot and rescued the doctor, said the OC.

Since the incident, Manik and his accomplices fled the area, said the OC. Police drives are on to arrest Manik.

Talking to our Kishoreganj correspondent, Shakil said soon after the incident, he inforemd Deputy Commissioner of Kishoreganj Sarwar Morshed Chowdhury and Police Superintendent Mashrukur Rahman Khaled about the attack and sought necessary steps in this regard.

Expressing deep concern over the incident, Dr MA Wahab Badal, secretary of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), Kishoreganj district unit, demanded immediate arrest of all the attackers and their exemplay punishment.
