Never-ending flood woes of Basail
The low lying areas in Basail upazila still remain under water while floodwater receded in other 11 upazilas of the district. The situation has made life of thousands of people miserable in the low-lying upazila for the last few months.
Several rivers including Jhenai, a branch of Jamuna, and Banshi, a branch of Brahmaputra, pass through Basail. Moreover, there are numerous water bodies in the upazila.
Water level of the rivers has increased for the last few days. Waters then entered through different points overflowing the beels and canals in Basail. As a result, more than 30,000 people of different villages in six unions of the upazila have been marooned again.
The worst affected villages are Kanchanpur, Adajan, Purbo Poulee, Singardak and Saidampur under Kanchanpur union and Moytha, Karatiapara, Aishora, Akdhala, Balia and Tironcha under Fulki union, and Maijdhara, Borni Kishori, Basail Dakkhinpara under Basail municipality, and Badiajan, Gumnibari, Barctha, Kolyanpur, Kawaljani and Sehrail under Kawaljani union and Bathuli Sadi and Baghil-Fulbari under Kashil union, and Rashora, Mirikpur, Naikanbari and Habla under Basail Sadar union.
The flood affected people were facing acute crisis of safe drinking water and fodder for their cattle, locals said.
Mamunur Rashid Khan, chairman of Kanchanpur union parishad (UP), said the road communication between the upazila headquarters and the union has remained disrupted due to the floodwater, causing immense sufferings to people of 22 villages.
Rozdid Ahmed, upazila engineer of Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED) in Basail, said two important bridges in the area have been damaged by floods in July.
Around 70 kilometers of earthen roads and 20 kilometers of concrete roads were damaged by the two phases of floods, said the LGED engineer.
Md Shakhawat Hossain, project implementation officer (PIO) in Basail, said water level of the rivers has recently increased, flooding several areas in the upazila. Several union parishad chairmen have been asked to prepare lists of the damages.
Necessary steps will be taken after visiting the affected areas, said the PIO.
Kazi Alid Islam, upazila parishad chairman in Basail, said Basail is the low lying area. This year, the upazila has been badly affected due to the prolonged floods.
Moreover, increasing water level of the rivers for the last few days entered through different points, flooding fresh areas in the upazila including Fulki, Kashil, Kawaljani, Kanchanpur, Basail Sadar, Habla and Basail municipality, he said.
Contacted, Md Sirajul Islam, executive engineer of Water Development Board (WDB) in Tangail, said some low lying areas were inundated after water level of the rivers, including Jamuna, has increased for the last few days.
