‘Militants’ threatened to blow up district jail if cohorts not released: Lalmonirhat DC

Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Abu Jafor has said he received a letter, suspected to be sent by militants, in which they threatened to blow up the district jail if detained militants are not released from prison.
The letter -- which contained threats of other subversive activities -- was posted six days ago by people the police suspect to be militants, DC Jafor told The Daily Star today, adding that he also received similar threats over phone two days ago.
DC Jafor filed a general diary (GD) with Khulna Sadar Police Station on Sunday night, said Shah Alam, officer-in-charge of the police station.
At present, some arrested activists of the banned outfits Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) are imprisoned in the district jail, jail sources said.
Abida Sultana, superintendent of police (SP) in Lalmonirhat, said security has been beefed up at the district jail, adding that intelligence agencies have started investigating the threatening letter and phone call.
