Law minister intervenes to return baby sold by mother to cover clinic’s expense
A mother had sold her new born child for Tk 16,000 to cover the medical bills of a local clinic in Gaibandha where her child was delivered.
A report published on this incident on Saturday caught the eye of Law Minister Anisul Huq, prompting him to take steps to return the new born to the mother Anjula Begum, said a law ministry press release.
Under directives from the law minister, the district administration of Gaibandha rescued Anjula Begum's child from Sadullapur upazila and returned the child to his mother.
Minister Anisul Huq sent Tk 16,000 from his personal fund to Gaibandha District Administration to pay Jamuna Clinic where Anjula gave birth to the child via caesarean section on the night of September 15.
Anjula sold her baby as she could not pay the delivery charge. She was released from the clinic on September 17. Gaibandha district administration also gave Tk 2,000, 20 kg chal, 2 kg dal, 2 litre soyabean oil, a saree and a lungi to Anjula Begum, the press release added.
She lives with her husband, two sons and one daughter in Solagari village under Gaibandha Sadar upazila.
