JKG executive officer Shafiqul admits to issuing fake Covid-19 certificates
Md Shafiqul Islam, an executive officer of JKG Health Care today confessed to a magistrate that he was involved in issuing fake Covid-19 certificates.
Metropolitan Magistrate Morshed Al Mamun Bhuiyan recorded his confessional statement after Md Liakot Ali, an inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of Police and also investigation officer of the case presented him before his chamber.
The magistrate sent Shafiqul to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj after recording his statement.
Earlier, JKG Health Chairman Dr Sabrina Arif Chowdhury, her husband JKG Health Care Chief Executive Officer Ariful Chowdhury, and one of their associates Sayeed Chowdhury were sent to jail after being interrogated in the same case.
Police arrested Sabrina, also a government official, on July 12 around three weeks after the scam came to light.
Following her arrest, the health ministry suspended her from the post of registrar at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases for violating rules.
Earlier on June 24, police arrested her husband Ariful Chowdhury and four others for their alleged involvement in issuing fake Covid-19 certificates.
The four are – Humayun Kabir and his wife Tanzina Patwary, Sayeed Chowdhury and Al Mamun.
Police have so far arrested nine people in connection with the incident.
