Govt approves online portals of 92 newspapers, including The Daily Star, for registration
The government has primarily approved online portals of 92 newspapers for registration, including country's leading Bangla and English dailies Prothom Alo and The Daily Star.
As part of the ongoing process of registering news portals, 92 daily newspapers were primarily given permission to register, said a gazette notification issued by the ministry of information on Thursday.
Major daily newspapers were included in the list. Of the 92 newspapers, 57 are published from Dhaka, two from Mymensingh, 10 from Chattogram, four each from Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna and Barishal while seven published from Sylhet.
News portals that have been allowed to register, have been requested to do so within 20 working days (September 23) from the date of publication of this notification by submitting the prescribed fee following the government rules and regulations, it reads.
Information ministry came up with the gazette notification two days after Sampadak Parishad (Editors' Council), a platform of editors of different national dailies, on September 1 called on Information Minister Hasan Mahmud and requested him to take immediate measures to register the online versions of newspapers.
At that meeting at his secretariat office, Information Minister Hasan Mahmud said measures would be taken to register online versions of newspapers on a priority basis.
