Goods-carrying water transport workers go on work abstention
Workers of goods-carrying water transports went on work abstention from early today to press home their 11-point demand which includes implementation of tri-party contracts, compensation for death on duty, and increased social safety net.
The workers started the work abstention following a "failed" meeting between Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) and transport leaders, lobour ministry officials and water transport owners, Chowdhury Ashiqul Alam, general secretary of Bangladesh Water Transport Workers Federation (BWTWF), told The Daily Star.
Due to Durga Puja, passenger-carrying transport workers have not joined the work abstention, he said.
This is for the fourth time, the workers are protesting to press home the demands, the general secretary said.
The workers are forced to go on work abstention as the authorities did not fulfill their demands even after giving assurance several times, he added.
He said they will continue their work abstention until their demands are met.
Issuing appointment letters and identity cards for workers are among other demands.
