Police recovered body of a female doctor from her official quarters at Melandah Upazila Health Complex in Jamalpur in the afternoon yesterday.

Sultana Parvin (37), daughter of Alauddin Azad of Dhaka's Mohammadpur, was a medical officer at the upazila health complex.

She was found dead in her bed by the upazila health and family planning officer Dr Fazlul Haque and police, who recovered five empty ampoules of pathedrine and a syringe from the bed, Dr Haque said.

"We are investigating the matter and trying to find out the cause of her death," said Shema Rani Sarker, additional superintendent of police (admin & crime) of Jamalpur, who visited the spot immediately.

Dr Parvin was supposed to attend her chamber at the health Complex to treat outpatients at 9:00am on Sunday, but she was absent, said Dr Fazlul Haque, upazila health and family planning officer at the health complex.

As a number of patients were found waiting to be seen by Dr Parvin in front of her chamber at 10.00 am, Dr Haque phoned her several times but got no answer, he said.

He said he eventually stopped calling thinking that she may have been experiencing some personal problems.

Around 3:00pm, several staffers of a private hospital in Jamalpur town – where Dr Parvin had a private practice -- went to her quarters to take her to the hospital, said Dr Haque, adding that the staffers found her door locked.

When she did not respond to repeated knocks on the door, the hospital's staff informed Dr Haque, he said.

Then the health and family planning officer along with police officials from Melandah Police Station broke down the door around 5:00pm, entered the quarters and found her dead on her bed.

The body of the deceased has been sent to Jamalpur General Hospital for autopsy, said Rezaul Karim, officer-in-charge of Melandah Police Station.

Dr Sultana became medical officer through 32nd BCS and joined the upazila health complex on September 15, 2018. She was a dutiful, patient-friendly and sincere doctor, Dr Haque said.
