Fast recovery of Ghoraghat UNO ‘a miracle’: doctor
Joint Director of National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital Prof Badrul Haque today said Ghoraghat UNO Wahida Khanam is recovering fast, which is "a miracle".
"The head is a very sensitive part and she suffered critical injuries there. Usually, patients with head injuries don't recover in a short time, but she is. This is a very positive sign," the doctor told The Daily Star today.
She can now lift her right hand above her head, the doctor said.
Although her leg is still paralysed, she has sensation in that part, he said.
"We are expecting that her leg will become functional soon," he added.
The doctor said Wahida could have recovered earlier if her surgery were possible at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
There were experienced and qualified doctors but due to lack of post-operation facilities, doctors could not conduct the surgery there, he said.
About the UNO's father Omar Ali Sheikh, the hospital's joint director said his condition is complicated as he suffered the injuries behind the neck, which damaged his spinal cord.
He is still paralysed from his waist down, the joint doctor said.
"He may also need to undergo a surgery... we will take decision considering everything," the doctor said.
The hospital is prioritising the treatment of Omar Ali (65) as it always gives priority tofreedom fighters, he added.
Omar Ali was shifted to National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Dhaka from Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) yesterday.
The UNO of Ghoraghat, Dinajpur and her father suffered injuries when criminals attacked her at her official residence on September 3.
