Two workers died and four others suffered burns after an explosion at a steel mill in Narayanganj's Rupganj early today.

The deceased were identified as Fahim (25) and Mizanur Rahman (33). The injured are in critical condition.

The explosion in the furnace of Premier Rerolling Steel Mill took place around 3:00am when workers were on their night shift. Molten iron fell on their bodies, leaving Mizan dead on the spot, Mohammad Saju, brother of an injured, said.

The injured were rushed to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. But they were later taken to a private hospital by staff members of the factory, said a staffer of the burn institute.

Fahim's relatives took him to the emergency unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he died around 4:00pm.

The four injured—Abu Siddique (30),  Razu (40), Shakil (20), Rafique (45)-- are being treated at a private hospital in Dhaka. Of the injured, Rafique sustained 15 percent burn injuries while the other three had more than 90 percent burns on their bodies, Partha Sanker Paul, resident surgeon of the burn institute, said.
