Eviction drive at Madhupur forest called off
After several days of a dispute centering the eviction of an indigenous community in Madhupur in Tangail, the community's people and the forest department reached a consensus to resolve the issue.
Both sides decided to compromise following mediation by the district administration this noon, reports our local correspondent quoting Eugin Nokrek, president of Joyenshahi Adivasi Unnayan Parishad.
After the meeting, Eugin Nokrek, also a leader of the indigenous community, told The Daily Star that the forest department assured them of not conducting any eviction drive without consultation.
The local administration also assured one Bashanti Rema, whose banana orchard was demolished during the eviction drive, of providing her with Tk 20,000 as compensation, he informed.
Meanwhile, the district administration also hinted that they will talk with the government high officials to resolve the long-standing land problem, he added.
The affected people had earlier gathered outside the meeting premises holding placards protesting the eviction.
Earlier on September 16, protesting the eviction of a Garo Woman from a banana orchard, local indigenous community seized the Dokhala forest range office and issued a seven-day ultimatum demanding to stop the eviction drive and to give compensation to Bashanti Rema for her loss.
