EC secy trashes BNP’s claims of selective axing
Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed has rubbished BNP’s allegations of rejecting their candidates as part of “a blueprint of the government”.
“Returning officers have annulled their (BNP) nominations through scrutiny. Why blame the election commission?” he said while talking to reporters at the commission office.
He made the comments while coming out of the commission secretariat this evening, the day that saw close to the commission’s scrutiny on nominations.
Up until this far, the Commission has cancelled 786 nominations during its scrutiny process before clearing candidates to contest for the general elections.
BNP alleged that its Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s nomination paper was cancelled as part of government blueprint to hold a lopsided election.
About the allegation, the EC secretary said: “This is not a final decision. There is still chance to file appeal against the rejection of candidacy.”
The aspirants whose candidatures have been annulled will be able to file their case by December 5 and process will begin from tomorrow while hearing on the matter will be held on December 6, 7 and 8.
