Dr Zafrullah wants to send blankets for Indian farmers, writes letter to Indian envoy
Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder and Trustee Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury has written a letter to Indian High Commissioner of Bangladesh Vikram Kumar Doraiswami saying that he wants to send blankets for Indian farmers.
In the letter he said, 37 farmers have lost their lives in India's cold wave. As such he wants to send blankets to help them, he wrote.
He confirmed the matter to The Daily Star today.
"We have already given 5,000 blankets in Bangladesh. Thirty-seven people have died in the cold wave in the neighbouring country. We want to help them, too. I also want to help farmers who are protesting there so that they do not die in the cold," he said.
"I said in the letter that the Indian government had helped us in 1971. That's why we thank you. I want to give 2,000 blankets to the farmers of New Delhi to show gratitude to them for their cooperation in the country's Liberation War. Bangladesh's rural weavers have made these high-quality blankets. We will be happy if India accepts this assistance," Dr Zafrullah added.
He also said that he wants to assist protesting farmers in India but "In the letter to the Indian High Commission, I did not mention specifically about the farmers who were protesting in New Delhi."
"I want to send this aid to the farmers who are demonstrating there. I support any type of movement if that is a movement for justice," he added.
According to the hospital sources, Dr Zafrullah on December 21 in a blanket distribution programme said, "…We call on the business community to help the poor and needy. These are big blankets and one can help cover several members of a family. These blankets were made by poor people. Public universities, Gonoshasthaya Kendra and one or two businessmen have assisted us in making these blankets."
