DoE fines 13 businesses for violating Environment Conservation Act

Department of Environment (DoE) today fined 13 businesses including two shipbreaking yards Tk 10.12 lakh for violating the Environment Conservation Act.

The DoE in Chattogram region slapped the fine after a hearing at its Khulshi office this evening.

Mohammad Moazzom Hossain, director of DoE Chattogram, told The Daily Star that two yards -- King Steel Shipbreaking Yard and S H Enterprise -- were fined Tk two lakh each for polluting the sea by releasing untreated waste.

Eleven other businesses including six diagnostic centres were fined TK 6,12,000 for not having environmental clearance from the authorities concerned, he added.
