Demo called at same spot by 2 Islamic groups: Section 144 in some areas of Narayanganj
The local administration of Narayanganj today imposed a ban on holding any public gathering in some areas of Narayanganj until further order after two Islamic groups called for programmes at the same spot.
Jashim Uddin, deputy commissioner of Narayanganj district, told The Daily Star that they imposed section-144 in and around City Corporation Bhaban to Chashara Shaheed Minar and Khanpur 300-bed hospital, starting from 6:00am today which will continue until further notice.
The restriction was imposed after two Islamic groups called for programmes at DIT area, said the DC.
Earlier, an activist of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat was arrested for making derogatory remarks against the recently deceased Hefazat-e-Islam Ameer Allama Shafi on social media.
Demanding his release, the group called for a programme at DIT intersection this noon while Hefazat-e-Islam called for another programme at the same venue this afternoon under the banner of Olama Parishad.
Centring the rally and counter-rally, a tense situation is prevailing there since this morning. The embargo was imposed to avoid any untoward incident, said the DC, adding that additional policemen were deployed in the town.
