Death penalty for 2
A Natore court yesterday sentenced two people to death in connection with a case for killing Awami League (AL) leader Dr Aynal Haque Talukder in 2002.
Natore Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Saiful Islam Siddique also acquitted 11 other accused in the case as charges brought against them could not be proved.
The convicts, Mohammad Torab, son of Bahar Uddin Mollah of Mahishbhanga area under Bonpara municipality, and Shamim, son of Palan Mollah, were also fined Tk 10,000 each.
Quoting the case statement, Public Prosecutor (PP) Sirajul Islam said, on March 28 in 2002, a group of BNP leaders and activists, led by the then Baraigram upazila unit BNP President Ekramul Alam, attacked Dr Aynal Haque, then president of Baraigram upazila unit AL, inside his chamber at Bonpara Bazar and beat him mercilessly.
At one stage, the attackers dragged the veteran leader out of his chamber and stabbed him with sharp weapon, leaving him severely injured.
Later, Dr Aynal's family members and relatives rescued him in critical condition and admitted him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital the same night.
The following day, Dr Aynal succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment there.
On March 31 the same year, Dr Aynal's daughter-in-law Nazma Begum, wife of incumbent municipality Mayor KM Zakir Hossain, filed a murder case with Baraigram Police Station and, after investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court.
Mentionable, the prime accused in the case Ekramul and three others -- Saher Uddin, Ziaul Haque Sentu and Alamuddin -- died, during the trial proceedings of the case.
