Crop fields damaged in Jashore after Ichamati surge
Extensive crop fields in the southern part of Jashore's Sharsha upazila have become submerged under water from India's Ichamati River.
Paddy fields, including those cultivating Aush and Aman, have also been submerged, Anisur Rahman, deputy assistant agriculture officer of the district's Kayba Union told our local correspondent.
The water level in the Ichamati River in India has risen sharply over the last few days, said locals, adding that the upstream water of the river entered through the Rudrapur Dadkhali canal, resulting in floods in the southern part of Sharsha upazila.
Thanks to the high water levels, farmlands of Kayba, Goga, Bagachara, Ulashi and Putkhali Unions have been inundated.
The water level in Dadkhali Beel is increasing by six inches every day, said Bablur Rahman of Rudrapur village.
Agriculture officer Anisur said around 350 hectares of land from Kaybar Thengamari, Awali and Gomar, Paipatara, Deyo and Mahisha beels of the upazila have gone under water, resulting in severe damage to crops.
Meanwhile, Sharsha Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Pulak Kumar Mandal conducted a mobile court there this afternoon and removed obstacles at several places including Dadkhali Canal.
A few people have been warned and fined Tk 2,000 for illegal obstruction.
UNO Pulak said this happens every monsoon. He said the problem could be solved if the switch gate, built in Rudrapur Dadkhali canal, was working.
