CCC pre-polls violence: case filed against 40 including rebel AL candidate
Abdul Quader, a councilor candidate in the CCC polls who did not get party support, and 39 others have been sued in a case filed over the death of a man killed in clash centring the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) polls.
Sejan Mahmud, son of the deceased Azgar Ali Babul, filed the case with Double Mooring Police Station today, against 13 identified and 27 unidentified people, said Sudip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of the police station.
Quader (50), Helal Uddin alias Helal (40) and Obaidul Karim Mintu (45) were among the accused.
Earlier, around 26 people, including rebel Awami League candidate Quader, were arrested in this connection.
"Detectives and local police jointly carried out raids at several places and arrested the suspects early this morning," said OC Sudip.
"All 26 suspects are being interrogated at the detective branch's office in Mansoorabad," he added.
Yesterday, 52-year-old Babul, a supporter of Nazrul Islam Bahadur, Awami League-backed councillor candidate in ward-28 of Chattogram City Corporation, died on the spot after sustaining gunshot injuries during the violence, police said.
An activist of Jubo League Mahbub, who also suffered bullet injuries, is now being treated at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), Sudip said.
When contacted, Nazrul blamed the supporters of Quader for the clashes as well as the death of his supporter.
The CCC election is scheduled to be held on January 27.
