Busy town road in awful state
A portion of nine-km-long main road in Lalmonirhat town lies in awful state for long, causing immense sufferings to commuters.
The condition of the two-km-long portion of the busy road is so terrible that people even cannot walk during a little shower. During monsoon, the road has become almost unfit for traffic movement.
Especially schoolchildren and critical patients are the worst sufferers due to the communication problem, said locals.
Townspeople said hundreds of people, including businessmen and government officials, use the road every day, facing serious problems.
But the authorities of Lalmonirhat Roads and Highways Department (RHD) and the municipality are yet to take any steps to ease sufferings of the town dwellers, they said.
The townspeople further said that the road has become almost unfit for vehicular movement due to lack of proper maintenance. Traders carrying their goods bear the brunt of continuous jerking.
During a visit, this correspondent saw a number of potholes and cracks on the road which has become muddy at some places.
Shamsul Islam, a businessman in Alorupa intersection area of the town, said they have been suffering a lot for long. The number of buyers has decreased due to poor condition of the road. As a result, they are incurring losses day by day.
They informed the authorities concerned about the bad condition of the road but it is yet to be renovated properly, he said.
The Roads and Highways Department in Lalmonirhat repairs the road occasionally but it does not last long, said Shamsul Islam.
Another resident Abdar Hossain of BDR Road area in the town said not only Alorupa intersection area but the condition of the entire road is terrible. This road is no longer suitable for traffic movement.
He further said the townspeople cannot move smoothly on the road due to ditches. Besides, mud covered the road even during little rain. So, they have to suffer a lot in the rainy season. The suffering is beyond description when they need to take a critical patient to hospital.
Lalmonirhat municipality Mayor Reazul Islam Rintu said as the road is owned by the Roads and Highways Department, they maintain it. As the road is not repaired properly, it is always broken.
Despite repeated pleas, the authorities of Lalmonirhat Roads and Highways Department are yet to take any steps to renovate the road properly, said the mayor.
Contacted, Lalmonirhat RHD Executive Engineer Mahbub Alam said it has become unfit for traffic movement due to lack of drainage system beside the road.
They have already taken a plan to repair the road and improve its drainage system, said the executive engineer.
They will immediate start the repair work to ease people's sufferings, the engineer added.
