Businessman abducted in Noakhali
Identifying themselves as law enforcers, a group of plainclothes men abducted a trader from his business establishment in Maijdee area of Noakhali town on Wednesday night.
The victim, Md Tajul Islam Jewel, 35, is a resident of the town's Laxminarayanpur area.
Jewel's brother Md Azim Chowdhury said he started a business called 'Ma-Moni Hardware and Sanitary' on Islamia Road in Maijdee in early March this year, alongside working as an area manager in Nerolac Paints company.
On Wednesday evening, he was sitting in the business establishment and working with employees to settle accounts. Around 7:30pm, four people arrived in a microbus and entered the shop. They introduced themselves as DB police and pressured Jewel to go with them. Asked why, they said there were allegations against him. He was then taken in the microbus to an unknown location andthere has since been no trace of him and his mobile phone is switched off, he said.
Jewel's father Gias Uddin filed a general diary (GD) with Shudharam Model Police Station the same night.
Sudharam Model Police Station OC Md Nabir Hossain said they were working on the basis of the GD filed by the father of the abducted person. However, no trace of him was found till 9:00pm tonight.
Noakhali DB OC Kamruzzaman Sikder said no DB police team had arrested any person from Maijdee on Wednesday. DB police is working on the matter, he added.
Noakhali Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Alamgir Hossain said his family was not giving any clear information to the police and that the abduction could be centered around financial transactions, he said.
The whereabouts of Jewel are unknown as his mobile phone is switched off, the SP said, adding that several teams of police are working on finding him.
