BIPF organises webinar to commemorate International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples
To commemorate International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, Bangladesh Indigenous Peoples Forum (BIPF) yesterday organised a webinar on Covid-19 and Indigenous Peoples of Bangladesh.
Sanjeeb Drong, general secretary of Bangladesh Indigenous Peoples Forum (BIPF) moderated and chaired this meeting.
The discussants focused on the high degree of socio-economic marginalisation experienced by the indigenous communities of Bangladesh, particularly how the Covid-19 pandemic triggered joblessness and further marginalisation of indigenous communities.
The speakers appealed for adopting an inclusive strategy to tackle Covid-19 in which rights and demands of the indigenous communities will be recognised and realised.

Shimrey, secretary general, Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP), Thomas Baumgartner, head of political, Economic and Cultural Affairs, Embassy of the Switzerland; Ruzan Sarwar, senior policy advisor, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands; Dr Rishab Kumar Dhir from ILO's Geneva office; Winnie Estrup Petersen, ambassador, Royal Danish Embassy; Mohammad Zahed Hasan and Evelina Chakma, program managers of Manusher Jonno Foundation were present in the webinar.
International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is observed every year on August 9.
