Registered with 'fake MBBS certificates': ACC files case against BMDC officer, 12 others
The Anti- Corruption Commission (ACC) today filed a case against registrar of Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) Dr Md Zahedul Haque Basunia and one other for allowing 12 fake doctors carrying out physicians' job.
After a long enquiry, ACC's Deputy Director Selina Akhtar Moni filed the case against Basunia, BMDC administrative officer Mohammad Borhan Uddin and 12 doctors who were registered as doctor with fake certificates.
Some twelve 'doctors' who did not even go to China or went there only as tourists, have produced MBBS degree from Taishan Medical University in China and got approval for practice from Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC).
The matter came to fore in 2018 when an ACC team under the supervision of the then director general Mohammad Munir Chowdhury led a drive at BMDC.
The students took part in BMDC's Registration Qualifying Examination using fake MBBS certificate of Taishan Medical University of China. After passing the exam, they had been giving medical service at different hospitals.
To check authenticity of their certificate, the ACC sent copies of their certificate to the authority of Taishan Medical University through Foreign Ministry.
The authority on January 21, 2019 said the certificates were fake. The ACC also sought suggestions of hand-write experts and found the students forge signatures of different officials of foreign ministry.
They had ever studied at Taishan Medical University and some of them just visited China with only tourist visa.
The university also sought punishment of the students, reads the case statement.
According to ACC, Zahedul and Borhan were supposed to verify the authenticity of the certificate. "It appears they were aware of the forge certificates," reads the statement.
In 2018, when the Daily Star talked to Zahedul over the matter he said Embassy of Bangladesh in China and Ministry of Foreign Affairs authenticated the certificates. "Since they give authentication, we did not verify it further," he added.
