2 students missing after boat capsizes in Rajshahi’s Padma river

Two students went missing after a boat capsized in the Padma river near Rajshahi city this afternoon.

The missing people are college-student Sadia Islam Suchona (22) and class eight student Rimon, said Mehedi Masud, officer-in-charge of Rajshahi River Police.

The boat carrying 13 people including Suchona and Rimon capsized near a dam in the Nabaganga area of the river due to strong current around 5:00pm.

They were out on a leisure ride on a small fishing boat, the OC said.

Eleven people managed to swim ashore, our Rajshahi staff correspondent reports quoting the police officer.

On information, two units of divers from police and Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the spot and started the rescue the operation, said Mehedi Masud.

The police official said such small fishing boats are prohibited for leisure trips on the Padma River.

In March this year, nine people, including a newly-wed bride, died when two such boats carrying a bridal party capsized on the Padma River in the Srirampur area near the Nabaganga.
