Covid-19: Can start vaccination earlier than planned with 35 lakh doses, says foreign minister

Bangladesh will receive a total of 35 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccine -- 20 lakh as gift from the Indian government and 15 lakh through a private company -- initially, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said today.

"In that case, we can start vaccination earlier than we had thought," he told reporters after an event on overseas jobs at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.

Indian government is providing 20 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccines -- developed by Oxford and AstraZeneca and manufactured by Serum Institute of India -- to Bangladesh as "gift", while Beximco Pharmaceuticals is importing the same company's vaccines for Bangladesh government.

"In total, we will get 35 lakh doses of vaccine tomorrow. We will start vaccination with this and then the rest of the vaccines will continue to come," said the Foreign Minister.

Some other countries including Russia and China have also expressed interest in sending vaccines to Bangladesh. Some private companies are getting involved in vaccine import, he said, adding that there will be plenty of vaccines coming in the days ahead.
