Three 'Tahrir leaders surrender' to police

Three district-level leaders of the banned militant outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir yesterday surrendered to Kotwali police in Jessore in the hope of returning to normal life, claimed police.

They are: Saddam Yasir Sajal, 32, and Mehedi Hasan Pasha, 20, both residents of Kholadanga Kadamtola area in the Jessore city, and Raihan Ahmed, 20, of Dharmatala area.

Last month, Kotwali police put up posters publishing names and photographs of five men describing them as militants, and Raihan was one of the five.

However, the trio surrendered to Anisur Rahman, superintendent of police (SP) of Jessore, at the police station around 2:00pm.

Later, SM Monir-Uz-Zaman, deputy inspector general (DIG) of police of Khulna Range, and the SP revealed the incident at a press conference at the SP's office.

"As the three youths want to return to normal life quitting militant activities, we will give them the chance," the DIG said.

Anisur said, "Police will provide necessary legal support  and counselling if anybody wants to return to normal life quitting militant organisations."

About the three, he said, "They are now in police custody, and the next course of actions will be taken following due legal processes."

In the wake of recent militant and terrorist attacks in the country, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and senior officials of law enforcement agencies at separate programmes urged militants to return to normal life quitting such heinous activities.
