Truckers' union 'vote rigging' leads to clash
A clash took place between two groups of truck-covered van drivers at the polling centre on the capital's Kalabagan playground over "vote rigging" in the election of their union yesterday.
Angered by the clash, one group vandalised the office of Bangladesh Truck and Covered Van Drivers' Union and torched its furniture at Tejgaon Truck Stand.
Witnesses said the clash ensued at Kalabagan at 10:00am between the supporters of two rival panels -- one led by Talukder Md Monir and another by Humayun Kabir Majumder.
A chase and counter chase took place between them. Later, Dhanmondi police took the situation under control by charging batons, they added.
Following the incident, Humayun's group went on rampage at the union office. Later, additional police were deployed there.
Harun-or-Rashid, vice-president candidate from Humayun-led panel, alleged that the supporters of Monir were engaged in vote rigging. Monir's supporters, however, said their rivals brought the allegation fearing defeat.
