Mahfuzur Rahman and Jannatul Ferdous had just withdrawn Tk 2 lakh in cash from a bank in port city's Agrabad yesterday. They boarded a bus to Shantibag area, dropped off, and were walking past a medicine store in Chotopole when a CNG auto-rickshaw zoomed past them.

In the auto-rickshaw were a group of muggers who snatched Jannatul's bag, inside which the money was kept, and fled the scene, said Fariza Akhter, daughter of the victims.

Mahfuzur Rahman is a former retired Deputy General Manager of Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation. Robbed off the money, the elderly couple are now distraught, their daughter said.

Contacted, Rafiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Halishahar Police Station confirmed the incident and said the police are investigating the case and trying to identify the muggers.
