Sultana Sarawatara Zaman’s 1st death anniversary today
Today is the first death anniversary of Professor Emeritus Sultana Sarawatara Zaman, a freedom fighter and social worker, said a press release. She passed away on this day in 2020, at age 87.
To mark the occasion, Bangladesh Protibondhi Foundation, which she founded in 1984, has published a commemorative album, "A Vision Accomplished".
Prof Zaman taught developmental psychology at Dhaka University and established the first Shishu Bikash Clinic at Psychiatry Department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
In 1984, she was awarded a doctoral degree from Emory University, Atlanta, US.
Prof Zaman received Rokeya Padak in 2008. She established an orphanage (Khela Ghar) for abandoned children found in the refugee camps in Kalyani, West Bengal, India near Jashore border.
She went on to establish an advanced dressing station for injured freedom fighters and civilians at Sona Masjid, Chapainawabganj, a subsector within sector-7, which was commanded by her husband Lt Col Quazi Nooruzzaman Bir Uttam.
Prof Zaman has left behind two daughters -- Prof Naila Khan and Lubna Marium -- and son Quazi Nadeem Omar, a freedom fighter.
