Suhrawardy’s anniversary of death today
The 56th death anniversary of one of the greatest leaders of undivided India Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy will be observed in the country today.
The unparalleled leader of all-Indian politics, who had dedicated his entire life to ensure the welfare of people by upholding democracy, died at a Beirut hotel in Lebanon on this day in 1963.
Suhrawardy was a Bangalee politician and statesman in the first half of the 20th century. He served as the premier of Bengal in British India and was the fifth prime minister of Pakistan.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to the memory of Suhrawardy on the occasion.
In separate messages, the president and the prime minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul of Suhrawardy, Suhrawardy, terming him the “champion of democracy”.
To mark the day, different political and socio-cultural organisations have taken various programmes including placing wreaths at the grave of the great leader in the morning, discussions, Qurankhwani, milad and doa mahfils in the capital and elsewhere across the country.
Born into an illustrious Bangalee Muslim family in Midnapore on September 8, 1892, Suhrawardy was educated in Kolkata and trained as a barrister in Oxford where he practiced law at the Gray’s Inn in Great Britain.
According to Banglapedia, Suhrawardy was deputy mayor of Calcutta (now Kolkata) city in 1924; labour and commerce minister in AK Fazlul Huq’s Praja-League coalition government; and civil supplies minister in Khwaja Nazimuddin’s cabinet during 1943-1945.
He was also chief minister of undivided Bengal during 1946-1947; law minister in Mohammad Ali’s cabinet in Pakistan during 1954-1955; and finally, prime minister of Pakistan for 13 months between 1956 and 1957.
