Star celebrates Staff Day
The country's leading English newspaper, The Daily Star, yesterday celebrated its Staff Day with the slogan "Glorious 50 Years of Independence; Courageous 30 Years of journalism".
The two-and-half-hour long programme was hosted virtually from The Daily Star Centre in the capital to mark its 30th founding anniversary.
The programme began with a tribute to the memory of late Latifur Rahman, one of the founding directors of the Mediaworld Limited, the owning company of The Daily Star.
Latifur Rahman, a legendary businessman and longtime chairman and chief executive officer of the Transcom Group, breathed his last on July 1 last year.
Rokia Afzal Rahman, the chairperson of Mediaworld Limited, and directors -- Shahnaz Rahman, Shamsur Rahman, and Simeen Rahman -- spoke on the occasion, praising the newspaper's journalists for their dedication and hard work during the Covid-19 pandemic and assured of all-out support.
Mahfuz Anam, the editor and publisher of The Daily Star, shared anecdotes of his 30-year-long journey with the newspaper and vowed to continue journalism without fear or favour in the coming days.
Congratulating the newspaper's staff for their hard work during the pandemic, he urged them for harder work in order to make 2021 a meaningful, significant and great year for The Daily Star.
Elita Karim, the editor of Arts and Entertainment and Star Youth, hosted the programme where Executive Editor Syed Ashfaqul Haque gave directional speech while several other staffers shared their pleasant memories.
Seventeen journalists and officials of the newspaper received "Pandemic Hero Award-2020" for their outstanding performances during the pandemic time last year.
They are: Tuhin Shubhra Adhikary (Reporting), Gazi Md Etrat Shahriar and Shahtub Siddique Anik (News Desk), Anisur Rahman (Photography), Chinmany Devorsi (Graphics), Dwoha Chowdhury and Mohammed Mostafa Yousuf (District Reporter), Farhat Chowdhury (Business Development--Sales), Shahir Hasan Khan (Business Development--Digital), Mohammad Shamim Chowdhury (Production), Jahurul Islam (Finance and Accounts), Towhedul Islam and Imam Hossain Chowdhury (IT), ABM Shamsud Doza (Business Dev--special), Naurin Jahan and Mohammad Anowar Hossain (Business Dev) and Ranjan Kumer Ghosh (Circulation).
A special recognition was given to Shyamal Biswas, former assistant officer (store) of this newspaper, who died from Covid-19 last year, for his contributions.
All staff members from Dhaka and the rest of the country joined the virtual event, and several of them spoke on the occasion.
