‘Political identity can’t be shield for any wrongdoer’

Warns Obaidul Quader

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday said the government has a strong stance against those involved in irregularities and corruption, as it believes that political identity cannot be someone's shield for doing any misdeed.

"Sheikh Hasina has proven that political identity cannot be a shield for any wrongdoer," the Awami League general secretary said at a virtual briefing after joining a regular views-exchange with Gopalganj road zone, BRTC and BRTA officials through videoconference from his official residence in Dhaka.

The minister said the government has carried out drives in different sectors including health and these drives would continue in the days to come.

Pointing to BNP, the minister said Bangladesh became "world champion in corruption" during the opposition party's tenure.

The government of Sheikh Hasina did not try to save any wrongdoer with party identity, and as a result, the accused in Bishwajit murder case did not get any favors, according to Quader.

Quader mentioned the murder cases of Buet student Abrar, Rifat Sharif of Barguna and Nusrat Jahan Rafi of Feni, saying that the accused persons in these cases have been brought to justice. He questioned if BNP could set any such examples during their tenures.

Earlier at the views-exchange, the minister said efficiency along with seniority will be evaluated in terms of giving promotion and posting to officials under the ministry.

Putting emphasis on maintaining the highest alertness in using government money and reduce wastage of funds, Quader said quality in road constructions should be maintained and urged the officials concerned to intensify their monitoring of ongoing work.

He gave directives to form a probe body to look into the incidents of road accidents and deaths in return journeys post-Eid and submit its report within the next seven working days.

Roads and Highways Department Chief Engineer Kazi Shahriar Hossain; Road Transport and Highways Division Additional Secretary Chandan Kumar Dey; Additional Chief Engineer Monir Hossain Pathan and Gopalganj Road Zone Additional Chief Engineer Md Zakir Hossain joined the views-exchange through video conference.
