One killed, five injured in Savar factory blast

A young woman was killed and five were injured in an explosion at a sweater factory in Ashulia of Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka yesterday.

Deceased Rima Khatun (20) was a worker at a readymade garment factory in Ashulia.

Jahangir Alam, senior station officer of DEPZ Fire Station, said the incident took place at Natural Sweater Village Ltd in Gouripur area.

Walls of three sides of the factory building collapsed after a machine that was used to transfer gas to a boiler exploded around 7:45am, he said.

Rima died on the spot when the wall facing the road collapsed on her while she was walking by, he added.

On information, two fire service units rushed to the spot, recovered the injured and sent them to several hospitals. Their injuries range from minor to critical but none sustained burn injuries, the firefighter said.

Among the injured -- Jalil (50), Aiyub Ali (40) and Mahfuza (40), who are workers of Natural Sweater Village -- have been admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital, said hospital authorities.

Firefighters are investigating the exact reason behind the explosion, Jahangir said.
