Oldest war crimes accused dies in Dhaka
Abdullah Al Baki alias Abdullah Hel Baki, the oldest war crimes criminal in Bangladesh, died of old age complications in his Dhaka residence tonight. He was 106.
"He breathed his last at 9:40pm at his rented house in the city's Lalbagh area. He was given bail in 2017," Baki's defence counsel Abdus Sattar Palwan told The Daily Star.
He was the oldest among all accused in war crimes trial in Bangladesh, Prosecutor Rezia Sultana Chaman said.
He was one of the four accused in the case filed for allegedly committing crimes during the Liberation, Rezia said, adding that the case is now at the closing argument stage before the International Crimes Tribunal-1.
Baki was arrested from his residence following arrest warrants issued by the tribunal in March 8, 2017.
The tribunal on March 19, 2017 granted him conditional bail.
