A teenager was found dead in a septic tank of a mosque in Kaunia upazila of Rangpur yesterday, 10 days after he had gone missing.

The deceased was identified as Suman Mia (18), son of late Rahim Mia from Sarai New Kazipara village in the upazila.

His family members said the boy went missing on December 17.

Police said students of Nurai Hafiza Madrasa in the upazila were playing badminton near the mosque yesterday afternoon. They noticed the body inside the septic tank  as its lid was open, said law enforcers.

On information from locals, a team from Haragachh Police Station rushed there around 5pm on the day and recovered the body.

The body was sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Sahana Begum, victim’s mother, said Sumon had been missing since three of his friends called him out of home on December 17.

AKM Nazmul Quader, officer-in-charge of Haragachh Police Station, said criminals dumped the body in the septic tank after killing the teenager elsewhere.

The reason behind the murder was yet to be ascertained, he added.
