Around two hundred people gathered in front of a house on road 9 around 6:45pm and started demonstrating following a rumour that a housemaid was killed by her employers, police said.
As police reached the spot and tried to bring the situation under control, the agitating locals hurled brick bats at the lawmen, triggering the clash.
The locals also vandalised the collapsible gate and windows of the building during the sporadic clashes which continued till 10:00pm.
Earlier in the afternoon, a housemaid of a family shouted from a balcony on the fourth floor of the house urging bystanders to help her leave the building as her employer had kept her confined after she began showing Covid-19 like symptoms for some days, Kamruzzaman Sardar, additional deputy commissioner (Uttara zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said quoting the family members and locals.
Hours after the incident, a rumour was spread that the housemaid, aged around 20, was killed by her employers as she had not been seen since her appearance on the balcony, the police official said as they saying.
Quoting the members of the family, who employed the housemaid, the additional deputy commissioner said the employers of the woman had kept her in isolation with Covid-19 like symptoms after she arrived from her village in Chapainawabganj recently.
The woman was sent to the house of the owner's mother-in-law, police said.
Kamruzzaman Sardar further said police have detained several people in connection with the vandalism and obstructing the police.
