Launch capsize at Buriganga: Mayur-2 owner denied bail
A virtual court in Dhaka today rejected a bail petition of Mosaddek Hanif Swad, owner of Mayur-2launch that hit and sank another vessel at Buriganga River on June 29, killing at least 34 passengers.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Fairuz Tasnim passed the order after Swad's lawyer submitted a bail petition through an email, claiming his client innocent.
On July 9, a team of River Police arrested Swad from a house in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area.
Later, another Dhaka court placed Swad on a three-day remand after Md Shahidul Alam of River Police, also the investigation officer of the case, produced Swad before the court with a seven-day remand prayer.
After interrogation, Swad was sent to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on July 12.
A day after the launch capsized, Shamsul Alam, a sub-inspector of Sadarghat River Police Station, filed the case with Keraniganj Dakshin Police Station against Swad (33) and six others.
The six other accused are Swad's employee Abul Bashar Molla (65), launch master Jakir Hossain (54), engine driver ShiponHawlader (45), driver Shakil Hasan (28), Sukani Nasir Mridha (40), and Ridoy (24).
