The Daily Star Editor and Publisher Mahfuz Anam and Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman continued to make in the list of top taxpayers since fiscal year 2015-16 when the NBR decided to honour biggest taxpayers in different professions and firms operating in different sectors.
Owning companies of The Daily Star and Prothom Alo -- Mediaworld and Mediastar, and their printer Transcraft were also recognised by the NBR for the fifth year out of 53 highest taxpaying companies at national level.
Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman received the tax card of his own and on behalf of Mediastar, while Transcom Group Chief Financial Officer Kamrul Hassan received tax cards on behalf of Latifur Rahman, Shahnaz Rahman and Transcraft at a ceremony yesterday.
A representative from The Daily Star Editor and Publisher Mahfuz Anam and Mediaworld Ltd received the tax cards on behalf of both.
Latifur had topped the list of the biggest taxpayers in the senior citizen category in the fiscal year 2015-16. Shahnaz was also earlier recognised as the highest taxpayer among women in Dhaka city.
Apart from making the list of top taxpayers, Transcom Group founder Latifur Rahman's family also got the title of "Kar Bahadur" or tax icon family, along with 83 other families from across the country in 2017.
The tax authority began honouring highest taxpayers since the fiscal 2010-11 initially in two categories -- individuals and companies -- with the objective of motivating people to deposit due taxes.
The idea was to encourage compliance and bring more people in the tax net in a country where just over one percent of the population file returns regularly, and tax avoidance is believed to be high.
The NBR revised its tax card policy in 2015-16 to expand the list of the awardees to recognise more compliant taxpayers engaged in various professions and companies in various sectors.
