Customs House at Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Dhaka seized alcoholic beverages from a consignment imported by giving a false declaration.
Customs officials at the depot in Kamalapur seized 360 cans of beer and 120 bottles of spirit from the consignment imported by J&C Trading and Business Consultant, said Mobara Khanam, commissioner of Customs House ICD.
The importer brought the alcohol along with other items by declaring that there are machinery parts, she said.
The importer tried to evade nearly Tk 25 lakh in taxes through the false declaration. With penalty, the amount of taxes to be paid will be Tk 60 lakh.
The items imported also include trousers, engine parts, masks and ceramic mug, according to Khanam.
The Daily Star tried to contact J&C Trading using the phone number posted on its website. A person answered and said they were unaware about the seizure but he did not share his name.
