HC asks why family shouldn’t get Tk 2cr as compensation
The High Court yesterday issued a rule asking authorities concerned of the government to explain in four weeks why they should not be directed to give Tk 2 crore as compensation to the family of poet Abdul Basit Mohammad.
Basit succumbed to injuries on December 10 last year at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, after he got hurt falling into an under-construction drain in Sylhet city's Amberkhana area on December 7.
The drain was being constructed by the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC), and no safety procedures were allegedly being followed at the site.
Yesterday, the HC also ordered the deputy commissioner of Sylhet to take necessary steps to conduct an inquiry into the incident and to submit the probe report to this court in two months.
The bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Md Khairul Alam came up with the rule and order following a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyers Syed Fazle Elahi and Golam Subah Chowdhury seeking directives to the authorities concerned to give Tk 2 crore to the family of Basit.
LGRD secretary, Sylhet City Corporation's mayor, chief executive officer, chief engineer, and contractor, as well as Sylhet deputy commissioner and metropolitan police commissioner have been made respondents to the rule.
