Former RHD chief engineer, wife sued over illegal wealth
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday filed two cases against former chief engineer of Roads and Highways Department Mohammad Jawed Alam and his wife Anwara Begum for amassing about Tk 3.09 crore illegally.
ACC deputy director Nasir Uddin filed the cases against them.
The case against Jawed is for amassing about Tk 84.64 lakh beyond known source of income, while the one against Anwara for amassing about Tk 2.24 crore illegally. ACC had issued notices to Jawed and his wife to submit their wealth statements on February 20, 2019.
On May 26 that year, Jawed submitted his wealth statement, in which he mentioned having immoveable property worth Tk 38.95 lakh and moveable property of about Tk 84.86 lakh, according to the case statement.
Anwara declared immoveable property worth Tk 1.7 crore and moveable property of about Tk 59.69 lakh, it added.
"The total amount of Anwara's illegal wealth is about Tk 2.24 crore which she had actually gotten from her husband, who earned it illegally," read the case statement.
Analysing income tax returns of Jawed, ACC found that between 1999 and February 2019, he has earned about Tk 90.47 lakh from salary and his expenditure was Tk 55.56 lakh. Therefore, his saving stands at Tk 34.91 lakh.
Jawed declared making a profit of Tk 18.45 lakh from FDR and saving certificates between 2007 and 2017 but no legal sources of the funds against the investment was found.
