Father Peixotto passes away
Rev Fr Joseph Stephen Peixotto, former principal of Notre Dame College, passed away in Dhaka yesterday, aged 87.
The catholic priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross breathed his last around 8am at Moreau House in Banasree.
Jyoti F Gomes, director at St Joseph International School, said Father Peixotto had been suffering from heart-related ailments and received treatment in Bangladesh and Thailand.
In December, he was admitted to Square Hospital with Covid-19 infection. He, however, recovered and was staying at Moreau House, a residence of the Holy Cross Congregation that Father Peixotto belonged to.
The American priest -- who came to erstwhile East Pakistan in 1962 -- had been a science teacher at Notre Dame College for 34 years. He served as its principal for 24 years. Since 2014, Fr Peixotto held the post of treasurer of Notre Dame University Bangladesh.
Fr Peixotto was a member of numerous committees and advisory boards for the Bangladesh government and the Catholic Archdiocese of Dhaka.
He offered advice and support to the boards and administrations of St Gregory High School and College, Laxmibazar, Dhaka; St Placid School and College, Chattogram; St Philip High School and College, Dinajpur; Udayan High School, Barishal, and many other schools and institutes.
The body will be taken for public to Holy Rosary Church, Tejgaon at 8am today, said a press release.
The funeral mass will be celebrated by Cardinal Patrick D'Rosario at 9am, immediately after which the body will be taken to the Holy Cross Retreat and Pastoral Center, Bhadun, Pubail for burial in the Community Cemetery there at 11am Friday.
