‘Envied the affluent lifestyle’
Two security guards yesterday confessed to magistrates that they strangled Chinese national Jianhui Gao to death in his Banani flat and looted Tk 3.49 lakh on December 10.
After a four-day police remand, the accused -- Abdur Rauf (22) of Jhenidah and Enamul Haque (25) of Narail -- were produced before the chambers of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates Md Tofazzal Hossain and Mohammad Jasim respectively, for recording confessional statements in connection with the murder case.
In their statements, both Rauf and Enamul said they buried the body behind the building to cover up the murder.
Rauf took Tk 1.76 lakh, while Enamul got Tk 1.73 lakh, according to the statements.
Both said they “envied the affluent lifestyle” and were looking for an opportunity to “change their fortune”.
Enamul strangled Gao with a towel while Rauf grabbed him by the waist.
Rauf dug up a pit in the back of the building and buried Gao with Enamul’s help.
Another Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziaur Rahman recorded the confessional statement of witness Joy Nandi yesterday.
After recording their statements, the courts sent Rauf and Enamul to jail.
On December 11, police recovered the body of Gao (47) from the backyard of the building he lived in.
Gao’s friend Zhang Shu Hong filed a murder case with Banani Police Station against unnamed accused on December 12.
A Dhaka court placed Rauf and Enamul on four-day remand each, a day after they were arrested from Banani on December 17 in connection with the murder.
Gao used to supply stones and other construction material to the Padma bridge and Payra port projects.
