End gender-based violence
Eminent personalities yesterday issued a statement expressing outrage and concern at the rise in incidents of rape and other gender-based violence across the country during the coronavirus pandemic.
The statement was signed by 21 prominent personalities including Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury, Hasan Azizul Huq, Prof Anupam Sen, Ramendu Majumdar, Aly Zaker, Mofidul Hoque, Nasir Uddin Usuf, and Nirmalendu Goon.
"We are deeply concerned and offended at the frequent incidents of rape, gang-rape, and murder and torture of women at the time of the Covid-19 emergency," the statement read.
They stressed on the immediate arrest of the criminals and exemplary punishment.
"Building an all-out national and social resistance through ensuring justice for all incidences of rape and torture on women," the document said. "Considering the source of the power of the perpetrators, taking proper preventive measures is urgent."
"With grief, we are observing that a portion of the young generation is involved in rapes and they are trying to use political organisations and leaders (for their protection). The political party in power cannot avoid this responsibility," read the statement.
It is urgent to put out clear messages and take proper measures so that such incidents are not repeated, they said.
The statement also reminded of the significant role of law enforcement agencies in this regard.
