The residential halls of Dhaka University (DU) will reopen on a limited scale on March 13 after nearly a year of closure due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the university's Academic Council today, Professor Abul Mansur Ahmed of Mass Communication and Journalism department told The Daily Star.

"The halls will reopen on March 13 for final-year honours and postgraduate students. The main purpose is so that they can finish their exams," said Ahmed, also member of the DU Senate and Academic Council.

The academic council will take a decision on reopening halls for students of other batches gradually, he said.

The council also rejected the proposal to reopen halls for students of all years, said the senate member.

According to today's decision, only honours final-year and postgraduate residential students can reside in their dormitories from March 13, he said.

On January 26, the provost committee of Dhaka University (DU) recommended opening residential halls by the first week of March for its final-year and last-semester examinees at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
