Death from stroke and cardiac arrests increased in 2020
The death toll from cardiac arrests and strokes increased last year compared to 2019, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) revealed yesterday.
Of the total deaths in the country, 17.9 percent died from cardiac arrest in 2019 whereas 21.1 percent of total deaths were caused by heart attacks in 2020. it said.
A total of 147,259 people died of heart attacks in 2019, whereas the number rose to 180,408 last year.
Mohammad Yamin Chowdhury, secretary of BBS, shared the information at a press conference.
The survey was conducted under the Monitoring the Situation of Vital Statistics of Bangladesh (MSVSB) project.
He said about 8,248 people died of novel coronavirus till December 31, 2020.
"There is a slight difference between ours and DGHS data," said Yamin.
BBS has identified 75 causes of death in the last two years.
In 2019, a total of 822,841 people died of different causes and incidents. The number of deaths rose by 31,412 in 2020.
Death from stroke almost doubled to 85,360 from 45,502 in the last two years, reads BBS statistics.
According to BBS, the estimated population of the country is 16.85 crore, and the crude birth rate was 18 per thousand population in 2020. On the other hand, the crude death rate in 2020 was five per thousand population, slightly up from 4.9 in 2019.
Talking to the Daily Star, Mohammad Tusher Mahmood, researcher of Dhaka Medical College, opined that lifestyle and eating habits are responsible for heart attack and stroke.
