Couple arrested for torturing 7-year-old house help to death

Police arrested a couple in Kishoreganj on Wednesday for allegedly torturing their seven-year-old domestic help to death.

The arrestees are Nadratul Ahmed (23) and Elahi Shuvo (34), an employee of a private firm in Cumilla, said police.

Nadratul, mother of a three-month-old child, employed Morium Akter from Bir Paiksha in Hossainpur upazila, Kishoreganj two months ago, said police.

Hossainpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Md Mustafizur Rahman quoted victim's mother Kulsum Akter as saying that the couple used to torture Morium.

Shuvo and Nadratul handed over the girl's body to her family members on Wednesday morning, saying that Morium died after falling from the staircase while she was playing, said the OC.

Seeing injury marks on the body, Morium's family members started screaming. Their neighbours rushed to the spot and caught the couple as they tried to flee the scene, said the police officer.

Later, they were handed over to police. The law enforcers sent the body to Kishoreganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

OC Mustafizur Rahman said the body bore injury marks including burn. She might have been tortured to death, he said.

Victim's father Sirajul Islam, a rickshaw-puller, filed a murder case with Daudkandi Police Station, accusing Shuvo and Nadratul on Wednesday night, said the OC.
