Clash with Police near HC: BNP leader, two activists held from Press Club area
Police yesterday arrested a BNP leader and two activists from Jatiya Press Club area, in connection with a case filed on charges of vandalism and police assault during Tuesday’s clash near High Court.
Police detained ABM Mosharraf Hossain, training affairs secretary of BNP, and its activists Advocate Alam and Advocate Touhid while they were coming out of the press club after attending a programme around noon, said Abul Hosen, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station.
Activists of a pro-BNP organisation locked into a clash with police personnel and blocked a road in the capital’s High Court area on Tuesday while demanding immediate release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Later, police filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station, naming 20-25 party, its front and pro-BNP organisation leaders and activists, and around 500 unnamed leaders and activists.
Two policemen were injured while a number of vehicles were vandalised during the clash, police claimed in the case statement.
‘HAPPY WITH VERDICT’
Meanwhile, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday expressed satisfaction over the verdict of the Holey Artisan café attack case.
“We welcome the verdict. We hope, we all will remain alert so that such type of incident cannot happen again in the country,” Fakhrul said while addressing another programme at Jatiya Press Club.
Referring to emergence of militancy, Fakhrul said such type of insurgent attack takes place when people’s democratic rights are curbed.
Fakhrul said Awami League presidium member Mohammad Nasim has criticised BNP as the party did not come up with any comment soon after announcement of the verdict in the Holey Artisan café attack case.
“It’s not right.... We made a call to form national unity soon after the Holey Artisan café attack, to firmly deal with the issue,” he said.
Seven persons were sentenced to death by a Dhaka court on Wednesday, for their roles in the July 1, 2016 attack.
