CCC mayor-elect promises to work with people; calls elections fair and free
Mayor-elect to Chattogram City Corporation Rezaul Karim Chowdhury today said the polls were held in a "free and fair environment" except for a few isolated incidents.
Rezaul, also the senior joint general secretary of Chattogram City Awami League, said this during a post-election reaction at a press conference at his main election office in Bahaddarhat today.
"I'm overwhelmed that people love me so much. People have shown me love; they have given me dignity and honour. I can promise that I will try to my best to serve the people. I will do my best to reciprocate the love of the people."
Assuring that he will work to resolve the port city's various problems by consulting with everyone, Rezaul said, "I can promise the people that I will work hard to fulfill my election promises.
"I want to say unequivocally that I will never use power for any unjust and immoral activities. We will continue to work for the welfare of the common people."
Rezaul said he would not be swayed by greed or immorality.
Asked about the very low voter turnout, Rezaul said a free and fair election environment had prevailed except for a few isolated incidents.
"Working people prefer work to voting. There have been some problems as there was no public holiday on the election day," he said.
He also added that there is no country in the world where 100 or 90 percent of the votes are cast.
"In democracy, whoever gets the most votes will be the winner."
